Enid High School’s basketball coaches had to scramble and cram Monday in preparation for tonight’s doubleheader at Moore.
Because of the Plainsmen’s Class 6A football state title game with Jenks, which originally was postponed until tonight, the school canceled tonight’s basketball games over the weekend.
But when the title game was moved to Friday early Monday morning, the basketball coaches had to renew their original schedule.
“We’re scrambling, but I know the kids will be excited to play, and we’ll be well prepared as well,” said Plainsmen basketball head coach Will Jones.
Said Pacers head coach Nicky Cooper: “It’s been nuts just trying to change everything.”
Both coaches were told about 10:15 Monday morning of the football schedule change, and both quickly tried to get film on Moore.
Jones said he was on the road by 10:30 a.m. to Yukon, which is the only team Moore has played this season, to pick up film.
Cooper, meanwhile, called Yukon, but because Yukon and Enid could play in the Lady Bulldog Classic this weekend, the Yukon coaching staff didn’t want to give up film. Cooper said she got a verbal scouting report, though.
While Monday was hectic, neither coach said they were upset by the situation.
“If it means we can’t be there (Skelly Stadium), but the football team gets a better night, then we’re OK with that,” Cooper said. “They deserve the Friday night lights.”
A far as being prepared on short notice, Cooper said she isn’t concerned about the late scouting report hurting her team’s chances of winning.
Moore’s basketball teams both are 1-0 after defeating Yukon a week ago, but neither team is ranked in the top 15 in Class 6A by Coaches Aid. Both teams return only one starter from a year ago.
The Plainsmen (1-0) defeated Woodward 63-54 last Tuesday in their season opener, while the Pacers (0-1) lost 67-52.
Enid’s games against Del City last Friday were postponed by the same snowstorm that forced the Plainsmen’s football game to be moved.
