Predictions by Canton coach coming true

By Bruce Campbell, Staff Writer

Canton coach Robby Davis has a good crystal ball.

In the preseason he predicted his Tigers, who hadn’t been in the posteason since 1983, would reach the playoffs. He was right.

Last week, he predicted District B-1 would go 4-0 in the first round. He was right, as the district went undefeated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year.

His next prediction was B-1 would sweep the second round.

We’ll know that in a week.

District C-3 went 4-0 in the first round, as well, repeating a feat it accomplished in both 2007 and 2006.

Another note, El Reno, coached by ex-Plainsmen coach Tom Cobble, beat Durant 27-18 in a first-round Class 5A game. The Indians host Miami Friday.

Here are some capsule looks at this week’s playoff games. All games are scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Class 2A

Kingfisher (9-2) at Washington (9-2), Saturday — Both teams are well-acquainted with the playoffs. Kingfisher has won eight straight first-round games. Washington has won seven straight. Washington has reached the Class A semifinals or better four of the last five seasons. Kingfisher reached the 3A semifinals or better five times since 2002. Washington beat Tishomingo 48-22 Friday.

Class A

Velma-Alma (9-2) at Okeene (11-0), Friday — A rematch of the 2006 state Class A championship won by the Whippets 24-14. Okeene beat Velma-Alma 42-7 in the first round in 2004 and lost to the Comets 28-0 in the second round in 1994 and 20-6 in the quarterfinals in 1992. Okeene has won five straight first-round games. Velma-Alma upset Hinton 31-21 Friday.

Hennessey (9-2) at Snyder (10-1), Saturday — The visiting Eagles, with a win, would have the distinction of reaching the Class 2A and A quarterfinals in consecutive years. Hennessey’s 41-14 win over Cashion marked the seventh time the Eagles have scored 40 or more points in a game this season. Snyder beat Elmore City 48-12 in the first round.

Class B

Depew (9-2) at Garber (11-0), Friday — Garber has won back-to-back first round games for the first time since 1997-98. The Wolverines are trying to reach the semifinals for the first time since 1998. Depew upset Porter 26-20 Friday.

Canton (9-2) at Weleetka (9-1), Saturday — Canton is in the second round for the first time since 1983. The team’s nine wins equals the most by a Tigers team in the last 38 years. Weleetka beat Watts 28-8 Friday.

Davenport (10-1) at Laverne (7-4), Saturday — Both teams have been ranked No. 1 in Class B this season. Laverne was the lone fourth-place finisher to win in the first round in Class B. Davenport beat Welch 65-20 Friday.

Ringwood (8-3) at Copan (10-1), Friday — A win would give Ringwood the distinction of reaching the Class C and B semifinals in back-to-back years. Ringwood has three straight first-round wins. Copan beat Keifer 14-9 Friday.

Class C

DCLA (9-2) at Shattuck (11-0), Friday — A rematch of 2006 quarterfinal game, won by Shattuck 28-12. The Indians beat the Eagles 58-12 in the 2003 semifinals. Shattuck has not lost since falling to Pond Creek-Hunter 39-7 in the 2002 semifinals.

Corn Bible Academy (10-1) at Timberlake (11-0), Saturday — Timberlake, with a win, would have the distinction of reaching the Class B and Class C semifinals in back-to-back years. The Tigers get a chance to avenge a 34-0 loss to Corn Bible in the 1998 Class C quarterfinals. Timberlake’s 54-0 rout of Sasakwa marked the sixth time the Tigers have scored 50 or more points this season. It was Timberlake’s fourth straight shutout. Corn Bible beat Buffalo 42-22 in the first round.

Covington-Douglas (9-2) at Thackerville (11-0), Saturday — Covington-Douglas coach Brian Smith had one consolation about having to go all the way to the Texas state line to play. He said it was closer than Boise City, which lost to Thackerville 54-0 Friday. Smith’s Wildcats are in the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year.

Temple (7-4) at Seiling (8-3), Friday — Seiling was the lone fourth-place team in Class C to win a first round game, routing Maud 51-6. The 51 points was the Wildcats’ highest scoring output of the season. Seiling is in its first year of eight-man football. Temple upset District C-1 runner-up Waynoka 32-30 in the first round.
