Abbott making impact

By Mark Rountree, Sports Editor

Entering this season, Cyle Abbott was listed as the fourth linebacker in Enid’s three-linebacker set.

But a season-ending leg injury to Tyler Barnes in Week 4 gave Abbott what he always wanted — a chance.

Abbott has made the most of his playing time. The senior enters Friday night’s game against Ponca City as the ballclub’s leading tackler.

After playing as a backup in the first four games, Abbott has been a starting linebacker in the next four, rolling up a team-best 59 tackles.

In his third start at left-side linebacker, Abbott made 14 tackles and recovered a fumble in a 10-7 overtime win over Yukon.

“We had our backs against the wall,’’ said Abbott. “We had to win that game to go to the playoffs. You just have to get the job done.’’

Abbott grew up with the Enid football program, starting his career in fifth grade. But his varsity career did not take off until the second half of this season.

“Cyle has really stepped up and played well,’’ said Enid linebacker coach Keith Lea.

Abbott is hoping to close the season strong. He said topping his 14-tackle effort is a personal goal.

Watching video of the next opponent, Abbott said, helps him prepare.

“I look for pulling guards and how good the running backs are,’’ he said. “And I watch to see if they run a lot of in-routes into my area.’’

As far as team goals, Abbott said the Plainsmen could be ready for a late-season push into the playoffs.

“We could have a run like the ’06 team,’’ said Abbott, referring to Enid’s run to the state championship game that season. “We just have to stay focused and do the job.’’

Enid appears to be a solid lock for a playoff spot either at No. 3 or No. 4 out of District 6A-4.

“I’d like another shot at Bartlesville in the playoffs,’’ said Abbott, who still distresses about Enid’s 21-17 loss to the Bruins in Week 3.
