Barney’s status for PHS game unknown



Chisholm coach Joey Reinart says he “has no idea’’ whether running back Will Barney will be able to play tonight against Pioneer.

Barney missed the Longhorns’ 51-6 loss to Turpin because of a broken hand.

“We’ll stick with what we do,’’ said Reinart. “We may have to pass less because that takes away one of our best receivers. Derek Burnett will take the load running the ball, but we’ll pass from here and there.’’

Barney’s presence was missed in the 51-6 loss to Turpin.

The Longhorns were down 14-0 before their first snap from scrimmage, thanks to the Cardinals returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown and CHS fumbling the ensuing kickoff.

“We couldn’t stop the bleeding until we had a heart-to-heart talk at halftime,’’ Reinart said.

Safety-wide receiver Andy Nelson will miss the game with a partially-torn ACL.

Chisholm (1-5 district, 2-5) overall is trying to break a three-game losing streak. The Longhorns have scored only four touchdowns during that streak.



PHS riding momentum into CHS game



Pioneer goes into tonight’s District A-1 game with Chisholm with two momentum builders.

The Mustangs had three backs — Haden Hedges (188), Aaron Chain (148) and Eric Camerena (103) go over the 100-yard mark in a 518-yard rushing performance in last week’s 44-0 rout of Hooker.

That was a tribute to offensive linemen Joe Long, Matt Schneider, Nick Brune, Nathan Isaacs, Tyler Wooley and Trevor Warren, PHS coach Ron Sunderland said.

“They wouldn’t have been able to do that if it wasn’t for the offensive line,’’ said Sunderland. “They have played really well the last three weeks.’’

The shutout was the first for the Pioneer defense since a 48-0 whitewashing of Cherokee the final week of the 2006 season.

Safety Derek Gabriel had 17 tackles. Gabriel, Sunderland said, benefited from seeing an end zone view of the defense a few weeks ago in a film session.

“That really helped him see some of the things we were talking about as far as the attack lanes are concerned,’’ Sunderland said. “He’s a really smart kid. He’s doing a better job of doing what he’s supposed to do.’’

Chiefs look to keep playoff hopes alive



Waukomis (2-3 district and 2-5 overall) will try to keep their slight playoff hopes alive when the Chiefs visit Pond Creek-Hunter (2-3, 3-4 overall) tonight.

“I can’t find any scenario where we could qualify for the playoffs if we don’t beat Pond Creek-Hunter,’’ said Waukomis coach Mike Felder. “I’m sure David (Panthers coach Kerr) is telling his team the same thing.’’

The Chiefs face an uphill fight even with a win with Laverne and Canton being the final two opponents.

Waukomis, though, is coming into the game on a high after a 56-6 win over winless Merritt Friday.

Dustin Parks averaged more than 17 yards a carry and quarterback Dustin Maxwell averaged more than 8 yards a carry, thanks to the efforts of offensive linemen Stephen Banse, Andrew Mack and Thomas Bryant.

“The line created huge holes for them,’’ Felder said. “It really helped to have Maxwell back.’’

The Panthers have been bolstered by the return of wide receiver Rikki Winton and fullback Tony Herrera. Both were out of the lineup when Felder saw the Panthers beat Medford 36-12 the opening week of the season.

“They didn’t look like the same team,’’ Felder said.



OBA AT HOOKER

OBA looks to clinch playoff berth



Oklahoma Bible Academy can clinch its first-ever football playoff berth if the Trojans (5-1, District A-1 and 6-1 overall) can win at winless Hooker (0-6, 0-7) tonight.

The Trojans are coming off their first loss of the season — 19-0 to Hennessey last week.

“If we’re going to lose, I’m glad we lost now,’’ said OBA coach Todd Kuykendall. “We can learn from that. We can evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and move on. This gives us three weeks to prepare for the playoffs.’’

If Hennessey beats Okeene (5-1) tonight, the Trojans would be assured of a home playoff berth in the first round with wins over Hooker, Mooreland (1-6) and Pioneer (2-5).

“You have to play with discipline no matter who you are playing,’’ Kuykendall said. “We have been focusing on our weaknesses this week and trying to perfect those.’’

The host Bulldogs have lost 28 straight games. A win would give OBA a school-record seven victories in a season.

The Trojans allowed only their second rushing touchdown of the season against Hennessey.
