No national title, but Sooners still drawing interest

The Enid News and Eagle

By Bruce Campbell Commentary

Oklahoma's football team has been the brunt of much criticism in a 3-3 start this season.

But the OU name still has sex appeal to TV executives.

For the second straight year, it appears every Sooner game will be televised either regionally or nationally this season. That's something the 2003 team, which went to the BCS national championship game, couldn't say.

Saturday's OU-Baylor game, which will be televised by FOX Sports Net, will have some story lines that should make it interesting for the TV audience.

The 4-3 Bears actually have a better record than the Sooners. If OU gives Baylor the same kind of breaks it did TCU or UCLA, the Bears could be in a position to beat the Sooners for the first time in the series.

This may be the first time in the Bob Stoops era the Sooners couldn't win this game on form alone.

Baylor needs two more wins to get to a bowl. OU needs this one to make sure it gets its necessary six victories to earn a postseason ticket.

If OU wins, it would be the first time this season the Sooners have won on back-to-back weeks. It also would give OU its first winning record of the season.

That could help give OU momentum for the Oct. 29 ABC-TV clash with Nebraska.

Campbell is News -- Eagle sports writer.
