New coach pulls double duty at Drummond

By Bruce Campbell, Staff Writer

Drummond High is going to get its money’s worth from Curtis Foster in his first year as a coach in the system.

Foster, who earlier this summer was named as the new girls basketball coach, is taking over the boys as well.

He succeeds Jared Burford, who resigned to take a coaching and administrative post at Waukomis.

“Curtis is too good of an asset not to take full advantage of him,’’ said Drummond superintendent Mike Woods.

Foster was impressed with the Drummond boys, who were working out at the gym during the summer.

“What made me want to do it were the people over there,’’ Foster said. “They are really a good group of guys. I don’t mind helping out.’’

Foster plans to work the boys and girls out together.

“We’ll be doing the same things,’’ he said. “Hopefully, that will help make the girls speed up and be more physical. It will make the guys play with more finesse and make sure they are doing the little things right and setting good screens.’’

Danny Mahaffey, who coached at Hugo last season, has been hired as both a high school boys and girls assistant and as the junior high coach.

Foster is a part-time employee. His schedule worked out better to work exclusively with the high school teams.

Mahaffey will be full-time at the school.

“This young man fits right into the program,’’ Woods said. “We’ll get the best of both worlds.’’

Mahaffey has worked with the Echols Group, a sports agency that helps undrafted college players get ready for free agent camps.

“He’s coming in pretty well-heeled,’’ Woods said.
