Majors KO Manhattan

Through two games in the Fourth of July Tournament, the Enid Majors have made it clear their opponents must out-slug them to win.

A night after falling short 9-8 against Boulder (Colo.), the Enid Majors threw an early holiday celebration Friday with an 11-3 run-rule victory over Manhattan (Kan.) at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The Majors (22-11) moved to 1-1 in the four-day tournament. They face Woodward, who moved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 6-4 victory over Boulder on Friday, in a must-win game at 7:45 tonight. Manhattan dropped to 0-2.

Manhattan jumped to a 3-1 lead in the second inning when Luke Slagle came around to score on a throwing error by shortstop Seth Floyd, and Kyle Speer hit a two-out, two-run double to center field.

The Majors evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the second when a pair of runs scored on a Dylan Nave double to left field. It was the first of three consecutive doubles for Nave, who batted leadoff.

Then the Majors blew the game wide open with seven runs in the fifth.

Kelly Padilla started the avalanche on a wacky base-running blunder that ended with him scoring. He attempted to steal third base with one out, but he slid past the bag. To avoid the tag of Manhattan third baseman Slagle, Padilla hopped to his feet and ran behind the Enid third base coach and took off for home. Manhattan had Padilla trapped on the third base line, but a throwing error to home plate allowed Padilla to score.

Manhattan appealed to the umpire on the play, but to no avail.

Logan Nault and Nave scored on an Eddie Cervantes single up the middle. Floyd drove home Nick Rountree and Tom Ward on his first hit of the evening. Zach Sell drove home the 10th run on a single past the third baseman, bringing home Floyd.

Nave scored on a Cervantes hit with one-out in the fifth to end the game. Cervantes finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Tobin Mateychick picked up the victory on the mound, striking out six and scattering six hits in five complete innings. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in his final inning of work.

Manhattan starting pitcher Mike McDiffett took the loss after allowing nine earned runs in 41/3 innings.

ENID AAA 7,

Eric Ramirez hit a pair of solo home runs, leading his team to victory.

Enid AAA scored four runs in the first, one in the fourth, and won the game with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Lawson King picked up the victory, scattering eight hits in six innings. Mike Phillips, who will start today's game against the Enid split squad, picked up the save.

ENID AREA 3,

Andrew Spurrier went 2-for-2 with an RBI as the Enid Area AAA beat the Enid Majors split squad 3-2.

Jake Streck allowed only two hits over four innings to improve his record to 4-0. Jeremy Smith pitched a scoreless fifth to pick up a save.

Smith and Omar Fiero were both 1-for-3 with doubles. Two Enid Area runs came off errors. Cody Austin, Chase Kokojan and Matt Fuksa scored runs for the winners. Fuksa stole two bases.

Enid Area, 17-10, will face Ponderosa at 1 p.m. today.

WOODWARD 6, BOULDER (COLO.) 4

Woodward moved to 2-0 in the tournament and will face the Majors for the fourth time this season.

The Travelers pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning to send Boulder to 1-1 in the tournament.
