Majors run out of innings against Boulder (Colo.)

Boulder (Colo.) made the most of its on-base chances and escaped with a 9-8 victory over the Enid Majors late Thursday night in the opening round of the July Fourth Tournament at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Boulder scored seven runs by runners who reached by walk, error or hit-by-pitch.

The Majors (21-11) had a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short.

Nick Rountree led off with his third double of the game, moved up on Eddie Cervantes’ fourth base hit of the game and scored on an RBI groundout by Tobin Mateychick to narrow the lead to one.

But Boulder left-handed reliever Jared Moore got a strike out and a groundout to end the game with the tying run on second base.

That made a winner out of Tim Kupfner, who allowed seven runs on 11 hits with no walks and six strikeouts in six innings.

Blake Schultz took the loss for the Majors, allowing five runs on six hits in four-plus innings.

Trailing 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Enid got run-scoring doubles by Rountree, Cervantes, Seth Floyd and Zach Sell to draw within one.

Cervantes finished 4-for-4 with two RBI. Rountree was 3-for-4 and Sell had two hits with three RBI.

David Bote was 4-for-4 with three RBI for Boulder. Bubba Baros had three hits.

In early action, the Area AAA team scored eight runs in the first inning en route to an 11-7 win over Enid AAA ballclub.

Jeremy Smith had two doubles with three RBI. Cody Coats and Omar Fierro each had two hits and two RBI. Chase Kokojan had two hits, including a double. 

Jose Renteria picked up the win in six innings, striking out six and walking two.

The victory improved the Area AAA to 16-10.

For the Enid AAA, Lawson King and Cedric Rose each had two hits. Cody Cooper slapped two doubles and knocked in a pair of runs.

In the second game of the day, the Enid Majors split squad defeated Ponderosa 3-2.

In the third game of the day, Woodward defeated Manhattan 13-2 in five innings.
