Legion tourney starts today

Baseball, food and fireworks will be on tap this week during the Fourth of July Tournament at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The Enid Majors open play in the tournament tonight at 7:45 against Boulder (Colo.).

Other first-round games are Enid AAA against Area AAA at 1 p.m., Ponderosa (Colo.) against the Majors split squad at 3:15 and Woodward against Manhattan (Kan.) at 5:30.

The tournament winner will be decided by best record.

The tournament officially began Wednesday night with the Enid AAA (15-9) beating Boulder 4-0 in five innings.

Starting pitcher Christian LaFontan picked up the victory, tossing a shutout in 41/3 innings.

Kaleb Hulva had a double, and Mikey Bretado drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first. Brady Baugh and Mike Phillips also batted in runs. The Enid AAA managed only three hits.

The Area AAA (16-10) faced Boulder in a non-tournament matchup immediately afterward and won 3-1.

Omar Fierro went four innings, scattering four hits and striking out two in picking up the win.

Matt Regier went 1-for-3 and hit the game-winning, two-RBI single in the fourth. Seth Park and Derek Gilbert also had hits.

On Friday, the ballpark will feature a host of activities, highlighted by the Majors’ game against Manhattan at 7:45 p.m.

A picnic-style dinner will feature Advance Food Company hamburgers, grilled boneless pork chops, potato salad, cole slaw, chips and soft drinks. The cost is $6. The picnic begins at 5 p.m.

Patriotic music will be played throughout the evening. There will be face painting and other activities for children. A 50/50 cash drawing will be held during the Majors’ game. Valet parking will be available at the front gate. The night will conclude with a fireworks display after Enid’s game.

Admission is $5. Children wearing Little League hats or shirts will be admitted free. Military personnel with an ID also get in free.
