Allen races to modified victory

Oklahoma City hot shoe Curtis Allen found the trip to Enid profitable as he posted the win aboard his Chickering and Son Concrete-sponsored Taylor Shaw car in the modified main event in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

“The car ran well. It was a new motor, so it paid for itself,” said Allen.

Billy Turner raced off the front row and showed the way. His run was short-lived as Allen took the point the second time around.

Jeff Autry flew off the track and brought a yellow flag in lap three. Bedlam broke out as the field entered the first turn on the restart and kept the track under caution. The next attempt was dismal, as three cars piled up on the start and brought out an additional yellow flag.

Allen sped away from the field on the start, only to see Joe Adams spin in lap five and trigger a huge pile-up in turn one. Allen headed up the field again, with Kip Hughes in hot pursuit. It was a drag race for several laps, with Allen breaking into a clear lead by the race’s midpoint.

Allen steadily raced away from the pack and never looked back. Hughes, Brendon Gemmill, Autry and Kenny Morris rounded out the top five.

Heston Shaw outlasted the field in a caution-riddled limited modified main to pilot his Hunton Oil and Gas-sponsored Star car to his first win of the year.

“The car ran pretty good. The last lap was a lot of fun,” said Shaw.

A yellow waved on the start as complete mayhem left six cars stopped on the back straight.

Shaw headed up the complete restart but his run was short-lived as Randy Miller charged to the front with a daring inside challenge the next time around.

Jesse Canaan came to a stop in the groove and put the track back under caution and Shaw back on the point. Shaw had a clear advantage when a two-car crash produced another yellow flag in lap four. Another caution flag flew before the race could get underway as Damon Seiger slammed into the wall.

Shaw sped away when the race went green and won in a photo finish at the line.

Nick Shenberger made a last-lap challenge but settled for second, with Ross McCartney, Greg Deterding and Darin Bush trailing at the finish.

Cliff Morrow conquered the field in street stock and drove his Lewis Plumb-ing/Morrow’s Auto & Truck-sponsored ride to his first win of the year.

Morrow rushed off the outside pole and set up a commanding lead on the start. A caution waved on the second lap for a crash that left two cars blocking the track.

Morrow continued his run on the restart and was unstoppable.

Travis Johnson worked his way through the field to capture second, trailed by Jerry Derr, Jon Herring Sr. and Wesley Kruckenberg.

Ronnie Ramer posted his fourth win of the year in the factory stock “A.”

Ramer launched his ride off the third row and showed the way. Ramer boasted nearly a straightaway advantage in four laps.

Brad Costello battled from the middle of the field and steadily closed the gap on the leader.

The white flag lap was a drag race, with Ramer holding fast to the point.

Costello settled for second, followed by Dustin Choate, Landon Maddox and Brandon Gibson.

Persistence paid off for James Goldman Jr. as he piloted his Kootz Racing pure stock to victory lane for the third time this season.

“The car was good and I have a great pit crew,” said Goldman.

Goldman launched his ride off the outside pole and took command on the start. Tommy Bohnstedt Jr. worked his way into contention, and the duo raced away from the field locked in a heated battle.

Despite a daring outside challenge on the white flag lap, Goldman held his line to the finish.

Bohnstedt settled for second, trailed by Tim Smart, Michael Watts and Tracy Meek.

The Oklahoma City team pulled together to take home the $2,500 purse in the Precision Wireline Challenge 10-lap dash that pitted five regulars from State Fairgrounds Speedway against five local drivers. Troy Gemmill posted the win in the race but the Oklahoma City drivers took home the purse with a one-point advantage.

The sixth lap of the challenge was red-flagged when the car piloted by Greg Burt erupted into flames on the back straight. Burt escaped from the car unharmed.

Heat winners in modified were Turner, Hughes, Troy Gemmill and Autry.

Shaw, Kenny Adams and Miller won their heats in limited modified.

Street Stock heat winners were Morrow and Bill Beebe.

Ramer and Costello won the factory stock heats, with Goldman taking the honors in pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park’s next card of racing will be 7 p.m. Saturday.
