Timms claims modified feature

By Cheryl Licklider, Staff Writer

Randy Timms found the trip from Oklahoma City profitable as he outlasted the field in the caution-riddled main event to pilot his Western Flyer Express-sponsored modified to his first win of the year at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

A caution waved on the start of the feature for mayhem in turn one. Curtis Allen raced off the pole and took control, only to see a yellow flag wave the next time around as three cars crashed in turn one. Two cars collided on the restart and kept the track under caution.

Allen sped away when the race finally went green with Timms in hot pursuit. It was a heated skirmish as the duo raced away from the field.

Allen found the quick way around and appeared unbeatable at the halfway point. A third yellow flag flew in lap 13 as Kip Hughes came to a rest in turn two. Travis Gorbet crashed into Hughes on the restart and kept the race under caution.

Allen continued his run when the track finally went green with Timms and Joe Adams in the hunt. His run was short lived as Jonathan McCoy came to a stop at the top of turn four in lap 16 and brought the yellow flag back out.

Timms charged into the lead with a daring low challenge on the start and never looked back. Allen held onto second, followed by Adams, Mike Roach and Jim Ciampi.

Randy “The Thriller” Miller dominated in limited modified as he piloted his “Rattitude” Big Bucket Rathole-sponsored Chevy to the winner’s circle for the first time this season.

“This is the best my car has run all year and the first race that nothing broke,” said Miller. “I want to thank Steve Vendetti and Ding Dong Darnell for building a motor that didn’t break.”

A yellow flag waved for a three-car pileup before the first lap was complete. Pacesetter Justin Patocka headed up the field when the race finally went green, but his run was short-lived as Miller took the lead in the second lap around with an outside challenge on the back straight.

Miller set up a straightaway advantage in a mere two laps and lapped more than a third of the field on his path to the checkers.

Greg Deterding, Ross McCartney, Scott Parli and Steve Blunk rounded out the top five.

Determination paid off for Travis Johnson, who made an amazing recovery and navigated his Big O Tires/BB Machine-sponsored street stock to his third win in a row with a breathtaking photo finish.

Travis King accelerated off the outside pole and led the early goings of the race. A yellow waved the second time around as Johnson spun to a halt in turn one.

King picked up where he left off when the race went green, but had some competition as Adam Schrag, Johnson and Jerry Derr moved into contention.

Johnson put his ride out front with a daring outside challenge at the line on the checkered flag lap to win. King settled for second, followed by Derr, Schrag and Ryan Bohnstedt.

Brad “The Bullet” Costello dominated in factory stock as he piloted his A & A Automotive/Ma and Pa’s Place- sponsored Chevy to victory lane for the third time this year.

“The car worked good tonight,” said Costello.

Costello exploded off the third row like a rocket and took command of the track. Landon Maddox worked his way to the front and put in a bid for the lead, but lost shape which saw Costello race away and take a straight away advantage to the line.

Earl Whitley made a late charge to take second, followed by Dustin Choate, Ronnie Ramer and Terry Costello.

James Goldman Jr. continued his run in pure stock as he posted the “A” feature victory for the second week in a row aboard his Kootz Racing ride.

Goldman burst off the third row and led the green-all-the-way feature to secure the win.

Michael Meek was second, trailed by Tommy Bohnstedt, Michael Watts and Tim Smart.

Kip Hughes thrilled the hometown crowd as he led the Enid team to victory in the inaugural $1,000 Enid Speedway Park Challenge Shootout.

The special race pitted five of the top local contenders against a team from Oklahoma City. Next week the same teams will compete in the Precision Wireline/Western Flyer Express-sponsored challenge with $2,500 on the line.

Heat winners in modified were Billy Turner, Timms, Allen and Allen Chickering.

Patocka, Kenny Adams and Miller won their heats in limited modified.

Street stock heat wins went to Derr and Johnson.

Factory stock heat winners were Brad Costello and Whitley. Watts and Goldman took the honors in pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park’s next card will be 7 p.m. Saturday
