Melvin takes 3rd in 3,200

ARDMORE — Freshman Rani Melvin finished third in the girls’ 3,200 with a time of 12 minutes to highlight Enid’s first day at the Class 6A state track championships Friday.

Melvin teamed with Whitney Warfield, Heather Capozzella and Katelyn Belisle to finish sixth in the 3,200-meter relay with a season-best time of 10:11.23.

“I know she (Melvin) was disappointed, but it was a great performance on a very hot day,’’ said Enid coach Joe Miranov.

“All the girls did pretty well today. We tell them at state they need to show up and be ready to run. They proved they belonged today. It was so good to see the 3,200 meter relay on the podium ... to get your best time at state shows you did everything right to get ready.’’

Ameshia Lofton was sixth in the high jump with a leap of five feet. Samantha Eby was 10th in the discus with a throw of 103-2.

Tia Morris qualified for the finals in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 15.90 seconds.

The boys 3,200-meter relay of Kegan Reeves, Ben Foster, Colton Eckert and Cody Camacho were ninth with a time of 8:25.52.

“What a good performance,’’ Miranov said. “We didn’t think they would even qualify and here they get ninth.’’

The Pacers failed to qualify in the 400-meter relay(Lofton, Shaykia Ross, Iesha Freeman and Morgan Booth), 51.13; the 800-meter relay (Lofton, Ross, Freeman and Booth); and the 1,600-meter relay (Warfield, Tabitha Haley, Allison Gracey and Belisle), 4:20.

Melvin will be one of the favorites in both the 800 and 1,600 meters today. Warfield will join her in the 800.

Camacho is ranked No. 3 in the boys 800 meters.

Eby is ranked No. 1 for today’s girls shot put..
