Netters advance 2 divisions at state

OKLAHOMA CITY — Enid’s boys tennis season will last another day.

Felix Nowakowski, No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Devin Glasgow and Gibson Rose both won first-round consolation matches to stay alive at the Class 5A state tennis tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center Friday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Derek Ogle and Matt Worrell were eliminated after two losses.

Nowakowski lost to No. 7 seed Thomas Tran, of Westmoore, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round, but came back to defeat Edmond Santa Fe’s Mason Trimble 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Nowakowski, 15-18, will play Nick Jordan at 8 this morning in the consolation quarterfinals. If he wins, he will be assured of at least eighth place.

“He’s been playing real well since the conference tournament,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon.

Rose and Glasgow lost to top-seeded Bowen Xu and Aaron Krauss, of Edmond Memorial, 6-1, 6-3, but came back to defeat Putnam City’s (first names unavailable) Corman and Tepsick, 6-0, 6-0.

Glasgow and Gibson , 27-21, will face the Lawton Eisenhower team of Tommy Harrison and McCoy at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation quarterfinals.

“They are playing real well right now,’’ Herndon said. “They have as good as chance as anyone else to get past that match.’’

Ogle, a senior, and Worrell lost to No. 7 seed Cao Tuong and Davison Nguyen, of Westmoore, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and to Owasso’s Evans and Germany, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of consolations.

The newly-formed team finished with a 6-5 record.

“It was a tough match, but they played hard,’’ Herndon said. “Derek did a great job in his career. I wished he could have played one more match. Matt Worrell stepped up his game this year. He has improved tremendously since the first of the year.’’
