Plainsmen set for state tennis tourney

Enid High’s boys will send players in three divisions to the Class 5A tennis tournament, which begins today at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Felix Nowakowski (14-17) will be competing at No. 2 singles, which begins at 9:30 a.m. The second round will be at 3:30 p.m. Nowakowski was fourth at the regionals.

Derek Ogle and Matt Worrell (6-3) will be at No. 1 doubles. Devin Glasgow and Gibson Rose (26-20) will be at No. 2 doubles. Both teams were third at the regionals.

Ogle was sixth at No. 2 doubles a year ago with Tim Thomas. The other five players are making their first appearance at state.

The first-round doubles will begin at 11 a.m. The next round will start at 5 p.m. Every player is guaranteed two matches.

Enid coach Darrell Herndon said he doesn’t see any of his players being seeded in the top eight.

“Our doubles teams would have been seeded sixth, seventh or eighth in previous years, but there are a lot of good boys teams out there,’’ Herndon said.

The Plainsmen have finished in the middle of the road in most of their tournaments this season. They were Centennial Conference champions.

“I think if we do lose in the first round, we would have a good chance against another loser on the backside,’’ Herndon said. “If we can get past that, I think we can be competitive against a 5-6-7-8 seed in the consolation quarterfinals.’’

Consolation quarterfinal winners Saturday morning would be assured of placing in the tournament.

“I expect our kids to play hard and not quit,’’ Herndon said. “I know there is some individual pressure to stay as long as they can in the tournament, but the pressure isn’t as intense as there have been on other teams in the past.’’
