More than 50 teams compete in tourney

Soccer moms will be in their element at the Enid Soccer Club’s 19th annual Mother’s Day Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Enid Soccer Club Complex.

Fifty-three teams from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri from Under 8 to Under 19 will participate with 95 games on the slate.

Games will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and continue until 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free

“It’s been a very successful tournament over the years,’’ said club spokesman Hamid Habibi.

Habibi said he expects a “very good crop of teams.’’ Diversity is the byword for the tournament.

“It’s great for our kids to be exposed to different styles,’’ Habibi said. “Each region has its own style — European, South American, African ... Enid is not that diverse so we don’t have that many different styles.

“It’s great for them to see how other kids are playing and what they are doing. They can compare themselves to kids from other parts of the state.’’

Habibi said the tournament should attract a large number of visitors.

“It really helps our town,’’ he said. “People spend the night, go to movies, shop and go out to eat.’’

The local teams should be competitive, Habibi said. He said the level of play locally has “definitely improved’’ over the last 10 to 12 years.

“Our kids have been playing at a higher level,’’ he said. “We have more teams going out of town and out of state to tournaments. Our Enid teams should have a good shot in those first-place games.’’

The state tournament is next weekend. Habibi said many teams use the Mother’s Day affair as a warmup for next weekend.
