CHS coach Black headed for Bethany

Jared Black has resigned after two seasons as Chisholm’s girls basketball coach to take a similar position at Class 4A Bethany High School.

He formally was hired by the Bethany school board Monday night. He had a record of 21-28 in two seasons with the Lady Longhorns.

“It’s a good opportunity for me professionally,’’ Black said. “I’ll be a little bit closer to my family (in Hydro) and I’m excited about that.’’

With Chisholm returning its entire team that lost to Watonga in the regional losers bracket finals, Black said it was a difficult decision to leave.

“I saw this as an opportunity that might not come around for another three to four years,’’ Black said.

“I felt I should take this opportunity when I can. I’m looking forward to testing out to see what 4A is like.’’

Black said he had many good memories at Chisholm. The Lady Longhorns were 9-15 in his first season and 12-13 the second.

“The biggest thing that stands out in my mind is that this year the girls and I got to the point we were pretty competitive in every game,’’ Black said. “We were starting to win the close games where you hope your coaching has influenced the outcome.’’

He said he built some strong relationships with his players.

“I’ve very appreciative for everything they have done for me,’’ Black said. “They’re going to be fine in the future.’’

Chisholm was Black’s first head coaching position after being an assistant at Guthrie for three years and at CHS for one.

“I’ve grown a lot,’’ he said. “I’ve learn how to look at a program from top to bottom instead of just one part of it. I learn you have to set the tone for what you want to build on ..I’m ready to make the move and look for new challenges down the road.’’
