Adams records first win of season

By Cheryl Licklider, Staff Writer

Joe Adams bested the competitive field in modified to capture his first win of the season aboard his Platinum Tire Service-sponsored Kraft car in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

“The car was awesome tonight,” said Adams. “We had a little miss in the motor, but Tyson Kraft set up the car and it was on. We’ve had four races this season and four Kraft cars have won.”

Todd Decker raced off the outside pole and showed the way. His glory was short lived as Adams took the lead the second lap.

Kevin Dickson and Calvin Bradford spun and blocked turn one, which brought out a caution in lap three.

Adams sped away when the green flag waved and boasted nearly a half-a -lap lead by the race’s mid-point.

Despite a caution on flap 14 when Decker flew off the front straight, Adams was never challenged on his route to the checkered flag. Jim Ciampi captured second, followed by Dusty Robbins, Jon Herring, Jr. and Bradford.

You only have to lead the last lap to win and that’s just what David Givens did to post his first win of the year in limited modified.

Frank Graven accelerated off the pole and took command of the 25-car field. A two-car crash on the backstretch put the track under caution. Graven took a commanding lead after the re-start.

Another yellow waved when Ronnie Ramer came to a rest at the top of turn two in lap four. Graven rushed away when the track finally went green with Givens and Greg Deterding in hot pursuit. Graven held the preferred line, but faded off the pace on the white flag lap with carburetor problems.

Givens took the lead and was never challenged. Jesse Canaan raced to second, followed by Ross McCartney, Deterding and Mark Willson.

Experience paid off for veteran Jerry Derr as he posted his second win of the year in street stock..

Cliff Morrow rushed off the outside pole and sported nearly a straightaway lead at the race’s mid-point.

A yellow flag flew in lap 11 for debris on the track. The restart tightened up the field, which saw Derr burst through the traffic to take the lead.

A second caution came out five laps later when Dustin Allen came to a halt in turn four. Derr picked up where he left off when the race went green and never looked back.

Adam Schrag, Jon Herring, Sr., Bill Beebe and Phil Pearson rounded out the top five.

Brad Costello dominated in factory stocks with a clean victory run his aboard his A&A Automotive/Plainsman Wrecker-sponsored car.

“I couldn’t have done it without my grandpa, dad and Jase Ensminger,” said Costello. “They worked hard on the car.”

Costello led from flag-to-flag to post his first win of the season.

John Whitley raced to second, followed by David Fisher, Landon Maddox and Joe Orozco.

Michael Meek continued his reign over pure stock as he put his Monte Carlo in victory lane for the third time this season.

Tommy Bohnstedt sailed off the third row and took the lead. Bohnstedt and Meek, his cousin, were in a head-to-head battle until Meek made a low challenge in lap nine to take the lead He raced to the finish line with a commanding lead.

Bohnstedt held onto second, trailed by Duane Head, Tim Smart and Tracy Meeks.

Heat winners were Ciampi and Kip Hughes, modified; Graven, Willson, Randy Miller and Logan Macy, limited modified; Derr and Clifford Morrow, street stock; Costello and Maddox, factory stock; and Head and Meek, pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park’s next card of racing will be at 7 p.m. Saturday.
