Jaguars sweep Enid

The Enid News and Eagle

By Matt Palmer Staff Writer

MOORE -- The letdown the Enid Plainsmen tried to avoid jumped in front of them like a deer on a fall night Tuesday at Westmoore.

They didn't see it coming until it was too late.

The Jaguars (2-1, 1-1 Mid-State Conference) used a 15-3 run in the fourth period to blind-side the Plainsmen (2-1, 1-1) 66-53 just three nights after Enid knocked off Class 6A No. 2 Midwest City.

The Pacers couldn't find a winning mark either, losing 48-44.

"The third game of the season, it's good to see some adversity and how we handle it," said Plainsmen coach Shawn Schenk. "We didn't handle it great. We played like five islands at times instead of one continent."

The Jaguars, however, hit 11 3-pointers, led by Kyle Worcester (17 points), who had five treys. Westmoore standout Jared Barton hit two 3s and finished with a game-high 18 points.

One of Worcester's 3s gave Westmoore its largest lead of the game at 38-31 in the third quarter before Enid charged back.

Plainsman Clay Robinson (10 points) scored six straight points, including a two-handed slam dunk, to cut the Westmoore lead to 38-37, and two free throws by Tyson Seng tied the game at 41 to end the third.

But the Plainsmen couldn't match Westmoore's 3-point shooting, as the Jaguars reeled off four 3-point plays in their fourth-quarter run.

Westmoore hounded Seng, Enid's biggest 3-point threat, all night, allowing him no 3-point makes and a season-low, but team-high, 11 points.

Enid hit only one 3-pointer Tuesday, made by point guard Clancy Roberts in the second quarter.

"I felt like we didn't defend the 3-point arc very well, and then we couldn't shoot it," Schenk said.

Kade Burleson joined Seng and Robinson in double figures with 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

WESTMOORE 48, PACERS 44

After a basket by Westmoore's Kandace Ryan to end the third quarter with her team ahead 32-30, the Lady Jaguars (1-2) stayed at least one step ahead of the Pacers to get their first win.

For the Pacers (1-2, 0-2 Mid-State), Tuesday night's game marked their second straight loss after a season-opening win at Woodward.

Natasha Flynn cut the Westmoore lead to 35-34 with a basket midway through the fourth period, and Pacers senior Sydni Jones sank two free throws with 35 seconds left to make it 44-41.

But every time the Pacers closed the gap, the Lady Jaguars responded with points on the other end.

The clincher came with seconds remaining, when Westmoore's Kristen Baker sank a free throw to create the final margin.

Shy of a foul on a 3-point make, the Pacers' fate was sealed, and the miracle didn't happen.

Seniors Stephanie Owens (18 points) and Jones (14 points) led the way for the Pacers once again. Meanwhile, the combination of Ryan, who scored 14 of her team-high 17 points in the second half, and Keri Ledbetter (13 points) led the way for Westmoore.
