Fairview High students place in essay contest
Holly Hiebert and Cody Ott, both seniors at Fairview High School, brought home third and fifth prizes, respectively, in the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs’ annual essay contest. The contest, in its eighth year, asked Oklahoma high school seniors to write on the topic of American heroes.
The five winners, as determined by the council’s six-member judging panel, were recognized at OCPA’s Citizenship Award dinner on March 21 in Oklahoma City. While attending the dinner, they met astronaut Gen. Thomas Stafford and discovered their portion of the $12,000 purse before an audience of nearly 600 Oklahomans.
Hiebert’s essay spoke of how the American soldier is and will continue to be the most important hero that exists.
An excerpt from Ott’s essay stated, “Pat Tillman was ready and willing to give up his life for his country, and as his family can tell you he was proud to serve and give his life for his country, he was truly heroic.”
Three other students received recognition for their essays, including Eryn Brooks, a senior at Woodward High School, who took first place and the top prize of $5,000; Allison Raborn, a senior from Marlow High School, received second place and $2,500; and Katie Jackson, a senior from Dewey High School, who received fourth place and $1,500.
OCPA is a leading non-profit, nonpartisan research and education organization headquartered in Oklahoma City.
