Emergency, absentee voting permitted in school election

Registered voters in Garfield County who become physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tues-day won’t have to miss the Dec. 11, Enid Public Schools special election, said County Election Board Secretary Lue Ann Root.

State law permits registered voters unable to go to the polls because they are incapacitated to vote on an emergency basis.

“Physical incapacitation” in-cludes such conditions as injury, illness or childbirth that prevent one from voting at the polls on election day, Root said.

County voters can cast absentee ballot at the county election board office, 903 Failing, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday or Dec. 10.

A two-member, bipartisan Absentee Voting Board will be on duty to assist absentee voters.

“In-person absentee voters fill out an application form ... They are not required to give a reason for voting absentee,” Root said. “They are required to swear that they have not voted a regular mail absentee ballot and that they will not vote at their polling places on election day.”

The board verifies a voter’s registration information, then issues the voter’s ballots.

“It is very much like voting at a precinct polling place,” Root said.
