Kingfisher’s Teen Awareness Group provides prevention tool

KINGFISHER — They’ve been around for just about two years, but already Kingfisher High School’s Teen Awareness Group (TAG) is making a difference. Earlier this month, they were instrumental in passing a social host law for the city of Kingfisher, according to sponsor Lisa Copeland.

Social host liability, as defined by MADD, is a law that imposes potential liability on social hosts as a result of their serving alcohol to obviously intoxicated persons or minors, who subsequently are involved in crashes causing death or injury to third-parties.

“They were really involved (in the process), and got the law passed without any opposition,” Copeland said.

The student-led organization consists of several students, with 12 core members, according to Rachel Cameron, sponsor and school nurse.

While they raise awareness about underage drinking and tobacco use, participating in projects like 2M2L (Too Much to Lose) and SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco), they are interested in other issues, too, Cameron said.

“Those aren’t the only topics we address,” she said.

Susanna Krepel, TAG president, said she would like to see the group expand to address other issues, like depression and suicide.

“I think there are a lot more hurting kids out there than we realize,” Krepel, a senior, said.

The group is active, presenting “Every 15 Minutes,” an event designed to dramatically demonstrate the effects of drinking and driving, and they participated in a meth awareness campaign, held earlier this month. They’ve been instrumental in helping other schools, Hennessey and Lomega, for example, establish similar organizations.

TAG evolved through Youth Speak Outs, which are opportunities for youth to express their concerns to a listening audience, Copeland said.

“They decided they wanted to make a group to effect change,” Copeland said.

Krepel agreed, saying “I feel like we’re really making a difference in our school.”

Copeland said the students, as a group, are dedicated and conscientious students.

“They have a purpose, but school comes first,” Copeland said. “I’ve never seen a more dedicated bunch of students.”
