Letter: “Truths of gov’t spending” partly true

Enid News and Eagle

ENID, Okla. — It is always a treat to read the incomplete information provided in columns by Gene Lyons. The Nov. 1 column on government spending proclaimed Obama had cut this year’s deficit in half from his “inherited” 2009 Bush number.

Fascinating that he failed to mention that in round numbers Obama’s deficits each and every year that he has been in office have been over a trillion dollars each year, a number that in one year essentially exceeds the Bush 2005 through 2008 deficits combined.

I wonder what creative spin he can put on tax-payer handouts that remove incentives to go to work, punitive taxation mindsets among the governing elite who have never met a payroll and business killing regulations from agencies empowered by laws passed by a Congress operating well outside their enumerated powers.

Perhaps less likely to evoke strong emotions and readership, for many of us a civil, informed, thoughtful conversation with all the facts might be a better way to work toward change.
