Letter: Oklahoma veteran's obit gets it wrong

ENID, Okla. — Sunday’s Oklahoman obituary page listed the death of a veteran, who served 21 of his 31 service months in Okinawa and Saipan in the South Pacific.

Actually, Saipan and Okinawa are very much in the North Pacific, as well as Wake Island, Midway, Bikini, Kivajalein Guam, Iwo Jima, Chichi-jima, Tinian, Philippines, Enivetok, Hawaii and Johnston Atoll. I see this mistake all the time.

Also, I hear broadcasters saying Calvary and Cavalry wrong most of the time. Calvary is what preachers mention quite often, while cavalry is what Col. George Custer’s group was, as well as the horse and mule outfit at Fort Sill.
