Richard and Diana Mitchell honored with HOPE Award for Community Service by Red Cross

Enid News and Eagle

ENID, Okla. — Thumbs up to two Enid residents recognized recently by the American Red Cross.

Richard and Diana Mitchell are volunteers with the Central and Western Oklahoma Region of the nonprofit, which responds to disasters worldwide (among other things).

The Mitchells were honored with a HOPE Award for Community Service.

Thanks for being willing to travel anywhere in the region for an event, or to assist with disaster response.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to an unsettling report that syphilis is on the rise in Garfield County.

Ten early syphilis cases were reported in Garfield County during all of 2012.

So far this year, 18 new cases have been reported.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health has declared a syphilis outbreak among young adults in Enid and the surrounding areas.

The good news? Syphilis can be identified by examination and testing, cured with antibiotics, and through disease investigation, so the spread of syphilis can be stopped.

THUMBS UP

More thumbs up to an Enid success state politics and a family that’s synonymous with Enid’s retail scene for being inducted into the Enid Public School Foundation Hall of Fame.

Inductees were Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb and the Pat Blevins family.

A former U.S. Secret Service agent, Lamb organized the Oklahoma Commission on School Security earlier this year and served as its chairman.

The Blevins family, owners of Jumbo Foods and Save-A-Lot stores in Enid, have been generous friends to the local school district.

Congrats to these important honorees for their contributions to education, our community and their respective professions.

THUMBS UP

Finally, thumbs up to Clint Chelf for his recent Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolades.

Unfortunately, the senior standout from Enid has been off limits to the media since reclaiming the starting role as Oklahoma State quarterback.

Since you haven’t been able to talk to us, just know we’re proud of you, Clint.
