Enid News and Eagle
ENID, Okla. —
Thumbs up for many volunteers recently canvassing the streets of Enid to gather bags of food during the spring Horn of Plenty food drive.
The Horn of Plenty facility planned to close this past week to allow time for collected items to be stocked onto shelves.
Distribution of the items should start on Monday.
Items collected by the nonprofit agency are distributed to 13 other agencies providing food to those in need. There were 84,648 items handed out by the Horn of Plenty last year.
Thank you for your efforts!
Now that we’re done devouring delicious barbecue, thumbs up to the ninth annual Roberts Ranch Smokin’ Red Dirt Barbeque contest that concluded this weekend.
Roberts Ranch Smokin’ Red Dirt Barbeque is a contest sanctioned by Kansas City Barbeque Society.
With $13,000 in total prize money awarded, the grand champion also gets an automatic bid to the American Royal in Kansas City, the world’s largest barbecue contest.
Teams competing here earned points to rank up in the KCBS team competition.
The Red Dirt Barbeque keeps getting better every year. Thanks to everyone involved.
In legislative news, thumbs up to a new law that takes effect Nov. 1 that will close a loophole in the current sex offender registration statutes.
House Bill 3016, by Rep. Sean Roberts and Sen. AJ Griffin, will require sex offenders to register in Oklahoma if they spend 14 days in the state in a 60-day period.
Current law only requires them to register if they spend seven consecutive days in the state.
Law enforcement must be able to track the movement of sex offenders, so we appreciate this practical lawmaking effort.
Last, but not least, thumbs up to finding potential Pride of the Plainsmen nominees.
Nominations, which are due Friday, can be made by anyone. We encourage readers to participate.
Selection is by vote of Enid High School Student Council and senior class officers.
Nominees must have attended, honored, served or supported EHS; demonstrated the ideals of the Plainsmen Creed; and reflected a high degree of success in service to education, community or career field.
Recognition will be during the Class Day assembly in May.
