Latest crash at intersection might warrant a deeper look

Another accident at 54th and U.S. 412.

That’s becoming all too familiar of a story. Last week, two people were injured in an accident at the intersection. One man was driving east on U.S. 412 when his pickup was hit by a semi driving south on 54th across the highway.

In August, two other men were hurt at the intersection. That time, a pickup heading east on U.S. 412 hit the trailer of a semi turning onto U.S. 412 from the northbound lanes of 54th.

A couple of years ago, two people were killed when their minivan pulled out to the north from 54th and was hit by a tow truck heading east on U.S. 412.

That fatality accident in 2010 was the third at the intersection in five years.

The intersection is a busy one. There are plenty of businesses in the area, not the least being AdvancePierre Foods and Pelagic Tank, which are located just south of the intersection. AdvancePierre also has a facility at 54th and Willow. Hundreds of workers go through the intersection daily as they travel to and from work.

There are stop signs on 54th, which means traffic on the street is supposed to stop and yield to traffic on U.S. 412.

After the fatality accident in 2010, many people who commented on the story on the News & Eagle website wondered why there was not a stop light at the intersection.

In order for some sort of traffic control device to be put in at the intersection, there was must be a traffic study done. The city of Enid would have to request Oklahoma Department of Transportation make the study, since 54th is a city street.

Such a study would measure the amount of traffic at the intersection and review previous accidents. From there, any decision would be made by the city and ODOT.

We don’t expect the amount of business in the area to drop off anytime soon, so the intersection is going to remain a busy one.

Given the number of accidents that have happened there, and the amount of traffic at the intersection, it may be time for a study to determine what action to take.
