Letter: Stand up Christians

Enid News and Eagle

ENID, Okla. — I am a Christian! And I am ashamed that a former NOC Enid world religions/philosophy instructor’s only suggestion to the alternative of Christian prayer in the Invocation and Benediction at a public function is to do away with them altogether.

And furthermore, I am ashamed of every American Christian, or not, who will not at least consider standing with me on this issue!

The United States of America was founded by Christians, basically for Christians, with the idea of religious freedom for all. Meaning, religious persecution was to be abandoned.

We have had some backward motion on this matter from time-to-time, but over all we have come through it.

We have allowed many different religions into this country, and Mr. world religious instructor forgot several. To my knowledge, we never said “Check you religion at the door.”

Now the founding religion of this great country is being told, again, that we can no longer practice our religion in public.

If you feel that “Christian” prayer must be removed, at lease do not take the prayer out! Offer a “moment of silent reflection or prayer in your own faith,” as an alternative. And for the sake of everyone, make it long enough to reflect or pray.

We as a country are in the minority on the way we handle religion. We do not lop off heads or run other religions out of this country. I for one am sick and tired of having my rights trampled on for some other religious minority.

Stand up Christians! Show the world that we will no longer be pushed around about our faith.
