Letter: Take care of currently standing buildings

ENID, Okla. — I worked at the Santa Fe Depot at 200 W. Walnut for four years, and for those four years, the roof has leaked. Now on year 5, and after this last snow the roof fell in.

City manager Eric Benson has been notified numerous times over these five years, and no maintenance has ever been done. Now, to repair the building will cost an astronomical amount.

The Santa Fe Depot is a historical landmark and is used for many different organizations such as AM BUCS, Northwest Dance, Levi and Lance Dance Group, the Romeo Club, as a meeting place every month.

This building also is a rentable event space for birthday parties, anniversaries, etc.; the farmers market uses it weekly for canning, baking, jelly, pickling, etc.

This building is owned and maintained by the city of Enid. Instead of currently taking care of standing buildings, the city has elected to build new ones. Why? Why are we not taking care of the buildings that are used on a daily basis instead of spending millions on buildings that will only be used for special events?

If Mr. Benson is unable to find the budget to make the necessary repairs, I would like to suggest a fundraiser and all funds to the building for repairs and maintenance. Several of the organizations are asking these same questions. A concerned Enid citizen.

We caught the vision when, in May of 1961, John F. Kennedy told Congress, and the world, that the space race was no longer to be so one-sided.
“First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth,” he said.

I get what the wheat farmers are sore at Hoover about. He wouldn’t let them hold up the people for bread during the war. Their excuse is that everybody else held us up, so why pick on them.
