Letter: Consolidating agencies under Tourism Dept. has serious flaws

ENID, Okla. — Referencing the Feb. 20, 2014, Oklahoman article on Gov. Fallin’s consolidation plan for six state agencies.

The idea of consolidating five state agencies under the Oklahoma Tourism Department has serious flaws.

The agencies are not alike, but I see where a big state agency would see them as alike.

Some are statewide, and some are local.

Some thrive on a volunteer workforce. Some do not.

Some thrive on local large and small donations. Some may see them dry up.

Some serve both the state and the local community. Some do not.

Some serve both state citizens and state visitors, some do not.

Some are managed by persons skilled and degreed in their specialty, and some are not.

Some would be managed well by a state bureaucracy. Some would not.

All already benefit the Oklahoma Tourism Department, but that does not mean the Oklahoma Tourism Department would benefit them or the community they serve.
