Letter: Federal government should back off

Enid News and Eagle

ENID, Okla. — I watched the Fortnight For Freedom Opening Mass broadcast from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blesed Virgin Mary.

Mass was celebrated by William E. Lori, archbishop of Baltimore.

Christian religious freedom is at risk not only in the Sudan, Iraq, Egypt, China and other hostile regions, but it is also at risk right here in the United States.

The federal government is trying to force Christian entities to condone and pay for abortifacient birth control, abortions and other reproductive choices — which are not health care.

If you think the Muslim Street and the Arab Spring were rowdy, just you wait until we Christians who believe and live our faith hit the scene.

We are not an unruly mob. But we will not sit idly by and see the federal government force us to violate our religious faith and our consciences.

We have the right to live our faith in public. We will not be cowed by government dictates and hate speech laws.

At the synagogue in Jerusalem, a group of elders were discussing what to do with the troublesome followers of Jesus.

One wise fellow told them that if Jesus was merely a man, then his work would eventually fade away, but that if what Jesus taught came from God it would do no good for the elders to persecute the Christians.

This is still good advice today.

U.S. federal government — back off! We don’t want your culture of death.
