President Obama recently promised to refund five percent of his salary ($400,000 per year) to the Treasury.
Most people would say this is a step in the right direction to reduce our national debt, albeit the gesture may be political.
It is interesting to see if the vice president (salary $231,000), all our 100 senators and 435 representatives (salary $174,000), all of the nine Supreme Court Justices (salary $213,000) and all of the 15 cabinet members (salary $196,000) did the same thing. If you practice your arithmetic and calculate the amount of money this would add to our Treasury in one year, you would get around $5 million.
Our national debt is almost $14 trillion, so $5 million would not really put a dent in it, but would be a step in the right direction.
