Great big thumbs up to Martie Oyler, the Pillar of the Plains winner for 2012

ENID, Okla. — Thumbs up to Martie Oyler, who was named 2012 Pillar of the Plains.

She’s the 10th person to receive the honor, which was created by the Enid News & Eagle and its partners to recognize members of the community who have excelled in their civic contributions.

Oyler has been a longtime supporter of education. As a member of the 2010 bond issue committee, she helped develop the plan for the $99 million bond issue, the largest in Enid Public Schools history.

The finalists were Gary Kirtley, Dr. David Russell, and Larry and Rick Simpson, each of whom was deserving as well.

Thumbs up to the partnership between Enid Regional Development Alliance and Monster.com.

ERDA officials liked the way the Enid News & Eagle has worked with Monster and decided to use the career-building website, too, to help area businesses fill open positions.

We’re glad to see this partnership working.

Thumbs up and good luck to Cali Lebrija.

The Enid resident will represent the city in the Mrs. Oklahoma pageant Feb. 23 in Guthrie.

This is the first pageant for the 36-year-old, a mother to four girls and step-mother to three more children.

She hopes her experience helps young girls gain confidence in themselves, and she hopes to use the pageant to bring attention to blended families, such as hers, and their needs.

Thumbs down to ESPN broadcasters Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit and their comments during last week’s national championship football game.

It wasn’t for anything they said about the game between Alabama and Notre Dame. It was about comments they made concerning about Katherine Webb, a former Miss Alabama and girlfriend of Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron.

Thumbs down as well to ESPN for continuing to turn its cameras on Webb throughout the game.

The game was a rout for Alabama, so there was nothing compelling about Webb’s reactions.

ESPN later apologized for Musburger’s remarks.
