ENID, Okla. —
As I prepare to write my column for today’s paper, I have only one thing on my mind: my sister. Her name is Donna, and after five wonderful months, she boarded the train for California early this (Saturday) morning.
So, with your permission, I would like to write an open letter to the most amazing person I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Right about now, she is somewhere in New Mexico or Arizona. Right about now, tears fill her eyes as she reads, just as they fill mine as I write. Time … isn’t it amazing? There is no time or distance in the realm of the Spirit.
My sweet sister:
Your presence in my life is always comforting, to say the least ... refreshing, with lots of laughter. Thank you for being my right-hand man after my back surgery, and for all your prayers.
Thank you for taking such good care of mom all those years, as I know it was difficult at times. And I know you miss her. Thank you for the times you gave, when you really didn’t have it to give, for going that extra mile when all you wanted to do was stop and give up. Thank you for the tastiest fried potatoes in all of Oklahoma, for making me laugh as I watch you study the numbers for the next Lotto and your steadfast faith to win it ... for all those old pictures and the memories that go with them. You bring such joy and pleasure into my house with every visit.
You make ‘love’ simple, as it should be. You have come and gone before, but this time is different, somehow. This time, I watch you leave one way, knowing you will return another way. A different person, with new vision and new purpose. My heart is at peace for you, Donna, and my spirit leaps with joy for what God has for you this year. I am so thankful for the love we have for each other.
As I prayed for you this morning, knowing you were about to board that train, God began to speak this word into my spirit. This is for you, my sister. It’s a new day, a new year. Yesterday has happened, it is gone. Today, He does a new thing. Granny used to always say, “You don’t get your ticket till it’s time to board the train.” Well, all aboard, sister, your ticket has been punched, and this train is about to take you on a whole new journey. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Isaiah 61:7 says, “Instead of your former shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.” I like the way the Message Bible says it, “Because you got a double dose of trouble and more than your share of contempt, your inheritance in the land will be doubled and your joy go on forever.” This is a ‘go-to’ word for you, my sister. Go to it as often as you need to. It’s a word so fitting for this new year. God would say to you, “eat this word, meditate on this word, memorize it … take hold of it and and know that this is the year of the fix for you, the year of God’s grace on your life. This year will be effortless for you in ALL things,” says the Lord.
Donna, God is all about you this year. He is about comforting you with His favor and bestowing on you a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a heavy, burdened, and failing spirit (Isaiah 61:3). It’s 2014! We’ve just stepped out of the old and into a whole new year with no history and no memories.
It only holds the future and the opportunity to start fresh, with a clean slate, a new plan … God’s plan, “For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. When you call on me, I will come, and when you pray to me, I will hear and answer you (Jeremiah 29:11-12).” WOW! What a promise! I’ll take that myself.
This the first day of the rest of your life, my sister. It’s a time to think about that final outcome and what you want it to be. A time to “shoot for the moon” and go after everything God has for you ... with gusto! Attack it with the Word.
This is the year to take back everything the devil’s stolen from you. Expect the favor of God … expect Him to show up BIG in your life this year, beginning NOW! My prayer for you is found in Duet. 1:11 “May the Lord, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times and bless you as He has promised!” And He will … I know this!
P.S.: Donna, don’t forget where you left me! LOL
Beloveds, when God gives a word of encouragement and reinforcement, it’s just as easily given to you as to someone else. All you have to do is reach out in faith and take it. You’ll know if that word is for you. You do not have to see a thing to know you posses it.
Only believe, and accept it as already done. Take hold of that ‘thing’ — whatever it is. Let it drop from your heart down into your spirit, where it can germinate and grow.
Don’t allow the confession or words of your mouth to trip you up and cause doubt to come. Just keep saying, “It is finished!” It’s a done deal! All is well!
God loves you, my friends. Climb aboard the Faith Train with me and my sister. All his promises are Yes and Amen! Only Believe!
Keep the Faith and worship somewhere today.
