ENID, Okla. —
Rather than getting a ticket for being under the influence, would-be drunken drivers in Enid are just a call away from a free ride home.
Don’t become a statistic this New Year’s Eve. Do the right thing and don’t drink and drive.
The Enid Public Transportation Authority will be providing the service home from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
“Rides can be reserved in advance or called in when needed,” said Mark Anzalone, marketing coordinator for EPTA. “Callers should leave their name and phone number and we will call right back to confirm the ride.”
You can reach dispatch by calling (580) 233-7433 and receive a one-way ride to your place of residence.
“We’re not providing transportation from home to the bar, or bar-to-bar; it’s just one-way home,” said James Neal, EPTA general manager.
The rides are kindly sponsored by Jerry and Flora Boland, who lost their daughter, Lori, to an alcohol-related accident in December 1996.
In December 1997, Jerry saw a newspaper article asking for sponsors for Enid’s program to provide free rides to revelers on New Year’s Eve. He immediately called and told transit officials to send him the bill for the rides.
Meanwhile, AAA Oklahoma also will offer free Tipsy Tow service to drivers calling (800) 222-4357 until 4 a.m.
AAA sends the driver a tow truck with one additional person and transports them one-way up to 15 miles from the location they’re picked up. Tell the operator, “I need a Tipsy Tow,” and a truck will be sent.
Like EPTA, AAA will only transport you home.
Celebrate responsibly as you usher in 2014. Again, please don’t drink and drive.
