Giving this holiday season much better than receiving

Even though the constant negative economic news keeps coming in to potentially spoil the holiday season, it’s important to keep one anecdote in mind.

Giving is better than receiving.

We expect social service agencies in northwest Oklahoma to see an increase in requests for help with housing, food, utilities and clothing in our area.

During this time of year, several United Way agencies and other charities work hand in hand to make sure the needs of families and children are met. They go through a rigorous screening to assure there are no duplications and that more people are served.

Now, what our charities need is the same generous response from the community we’ve had in the past.

While many families may be more modest in their gift giving this year, we ask that local benefactors try as best they can to continue giving to the organizations that help local families.

Don’t forget that red kettle when you pass by going into the grocery store. Don’t forget to pick that angel off the Angel Tree. Don’t forget to drop that unwrapped toy into a Toys for Tots box.

It was Winston Churchill who said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

No truer words were spoken when it comes to the holiday season, the season of perpetual hope. Giving to help others often is the best gift we can give to ourselves.
