Bringing domestic abusers to justice

It wasn’t all that long ago domestic violence wasn’t taken seriously by law enforcement.

Admittedly, sometimes an officer’s hands were tied. An officer might respond to a domestic violence call, but the victim might not be willing to prosecute her abuser.

Also, domestic violence for so many years has been so hush-hush, it was one of those obvious secrets that everyone knew was happening, but no one wanted to talk about.

Times have changed, thank goodness. And programs such as the district attorney’s domestic violence prosecution program are helping get these batterers off the street and their victims much-needed help.

In the last 10 years, laws have been strengthened in Oklahoma to hold batterers accountable for their actions. More domestic violence cases are brought to court, and one reason for that is court officials no longer have to back off if a victim isn’t cooperative. Cases are now prosecutable, even without the victim’s cooperation.

The fact that prosecution of domestic violence cases is on the rise can also give comfort to victims that their cases will get attention. If victims are secure in knowing their cases will be prosecuted, they may be more likely to be cooperative.

We applaud the work being done locally to bring domestic abusers to justice.
