People must learn guns illegal around schools

For the last week and a half, the evening news has reported school lockdowns due to students bringing guns on campus or people roaming around schools with guns.

On Thursday, eight elementary and three junior high schools in the Moore School District were locked down after reports of a man wearing camouflage and carrying a rifle in a park. The man was later found with a plastic rifle.

It was the third lockdown in a metro school in a week.

It seems strange there are so many incidents being reported so close together. It’s frightening to parents when they hear about students bringing guns to school or hearing of someone with guns close by.

We appreciate schools taking the precautions when they are made aware of such incidents. It seems the best thing to do is to keep students contained to make sure the situation is secure and that students are safe.

However, perhaps it’s time for some more public education about schools being gun-free zones and anyone roaming near a school with a firearm (or even a fake firearm) is risking some serious legal consequences.

Parents and students also should be reminded as hunting seasons get under way that having a gun in a car on a school parking lot is also cause for problems. We know of past instances when students unwittingly kept a hunting gun in their car during hunting season and got into trouble for doing it.
