Fair is fun, educational

THUMBS UP

Garfield County Fair is a way of life in these parts.

It’s an event plenty of people look forward to each year. Not only is it fun, it can be educational as well.

One of the best exhibits when it comes to education is Farmer For a Day. Kids can go there an learn about life on a farm.

A lot of kids who go to the exhibit never have been on a farm. Farmer For a Day gives them a glimpse at what that life is like.

Thumbs up.

THUMBS UP

It’s high school football season. It’s a great time of year.

Across the state, things grind to a halt on Friday nights as entire towns turn out to support their local team.

It’s no difference in northwest Oklahoma. The News & Eagle covers some 30 or so schools, and we have some really good ones this year.

We encourage everyone to get out and attend a game. It’s always a fun time.

THUMBS DOWN

Don’t look now, but there’s another scam out there.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol has issued a warning about a telephone scam that’s reached the state. OHP officials say they have received calls from people who say they’ve received messages stating there’s been a serious auto accident and their phone number is on a cell phone found in the car.

The person is instructed to dial a sequence of numbers starting with *72.

According to AT&T, *72 is a custom feature for call forwarding. When it’s activated, it sends all calls to another phone number. This includes collect calls, which then are billed back to the customer.

People need to be aware of what’s going on. If you see a number like this show up on your cell phone, it’s best just to ignore it.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the fun that’s coming up later this week.

Cherokee Strip Days will start Thursday. In addition to the usual activities that celebrate our heritage and the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893, Kenwood Historic District is joining the fun.

Kenwood residents will showcase the things they’ve done to preserve the past, as well as dedicate a new park.

Cherokee Strip Days is a great thing. We are so glad Enid’s history and heritage are preserved.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the annual Walk This Way contest, which kicked off Saturday.

The idea behind the event is to get people to walk at least 1,100 minutes over a six-week period. The event is sponsored by Enid Metropolitan Area Human Resource Commission Health Planning committee.

Participants may join the program as individuals or with a team. All participants who walk the required number of minutes will be entered in a drawing for a $600 travel gift certificate. The five-person team with the most minutes walked will receive $50 VISA gift cards for each member. In addition, the company with the greatest participation will be awarded the corporate prize.

Walk This Way is a good way for people to get active, get some exercise and have some fun, too.
