At what cost do we convert to compressed natural gas?

A national oil producer likes the idea. The Oklahoma State House speaker likes the idea. And, certainly, Oklahoma Natural Gas Co. likes the idea.

There is a lot of talk about using CNG (compressed natural gas) in vehicles as a way to wean our nation’s dependency on foreign oil. T. Boone Pickens has been waging a television campaign proposing more cars convert to CNG. House Speaker Chris Benge this week asked for tax incentives to provide more CNG stations.

But will the consumers like the idea? That’s the million-dollar question. As two local car dealers pointed out, if the consumers demand the cars, they will provide them on their lots.

Right now, some companies have converted their trucking or vehicle fleets to compressed natural gas. They usually provide the filling stations themselves to fill the vehicles. Cost of CNG per gallon is a little over a dollar, while cost for regular gasoline has recently fluctuated between $3.40 and $4 per gallon.

Consumers have a lot of questions about converting their cars, so it will take a lot of education to help them understand just what this change entails. That kind of education will cost money.

Until consumers know more about CNG, the costs to convert and the actual fuel efficiency of CNG, they’ll be complacent about making this kind of change.

If the state Legislature is serious about a CNG initiative, they better be prepared to fund an educational campaign to get the word out. Or, they could just ask T. Boone Pickens for some help in that area.
