Did government overreact to Hurricane Gusav?

Because of the horrendous handling by Louisiana officials of Hurricane Katrina three years ago, when Hurricane Gustav approached New Orleans, officials decided they would be ready.

Predictably, since Gustav didn’t turn out to be as bad as had been forecast, some people are complaining the government “overreacted” in evacuating millions from the city.

We understand people don’t like to be evacuated from their homes. But there were good reasons to demand an evacuation this time. The main reason is some infrastructure work is still incomplete in New Orleans. Officials didn’t want to take a chance on any infrastructure failures.

Hurricane Katrina devastated so much of New Orleans, it hasn’t been rebuilt or fully shored up. With the storm predicted to be a Category 3 by the time it hit New Orleans, officials were rightly concerned.

However, Gustav still did a lot of damage in New Orleans, and the successful evacuation probably saved some dramatic horror stories from happening. Lives were saved by people heeding the warnings and leaving the area.

Officials will walk a fine line between overreacting and acting appropriately for a long time because of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. We stand by their decision to not take any chances with Hurricane Gustav or any chances with any hurricane.

If in the future people decide to ignore officials’ warnings, then they should be informed right now they do so at their own risk, and they shouldn’t expect government officials to bail them out if disaster strikes.
