After 3 years off, Enid is back on PRCA circuit

We want to give a big congratulations to the people involved in bringing rodeo back to Enid.

That definitely is a good thing for our community, especially during Oklahoma’s Centennial year. Northwest Oklahoma was settled by pioneers, and the rodeo is a link to that pioneer spirit.

As Doug Wade, one of the organizers, said, “You can’t celebrate the history of Oklahoma without a rodeo.”

This year the rodeo, dubbed Enid Stampede PRCA Rodeo, will be a one-night affair on Sept. 22. The previous big-time rodeo we had — the Cherokee Strip Stampede PRCA Rodeo — had a lot to do with landing this year’s rodeo.

Maury Tate, founder of MoBetta shirts that clothed country star Garth Brooks, now is in the rodeo contracting business and contacted Wade about restarting the rodeo. Tate is a former rodeo competitor and remembered the Enid rodeo fondly.

Unfortunately, the Cherokee Strip Stampede PRCA Rodeo ended in 2004 after 40 years in Enid when scheduling conflicts left it without a home.

Fast forward to now, though, and we’re back on the circuit. And this isn’t just another rodeo. It is sanctioned by Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is the final qualifying event before the national championships in Las Vegas. It also is part of the Prairie Circuit, which includes Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma, so it also could draw competitors trying to gain extra points for the Prairie Circuit finals in Kansas City.

We won’t know for sure which cowboys are coming until the Sept. 10 deadline, but rest assured organizers expect some big names to be here.

This is a good opportunity for Enid to show it can support rodeo again. It would be great to earn our spot back on the PRCA schedule.
