City has plan to upgrade its trash collection system

The City of Enid continues to work toward creating a more streamlined system for trash collection, and also to target areas that may need more assistance to get cleaned up.

First, the city has targeted an area — thanks to a HUD grant — that will receive free service for a time. The service will pick up debris and trash that is brought to the curb.

This is a good service to provide, and we hope the city pursues more grants to work on other areas of town. Expanding the service and giving people the opportunity to do some extensive clean-up on their properties benefits the entire community as a whole.

Second, the city continues to pilot the polycart program. We are in support of the entire community transitioning to the polycart system as soon as possible; however, a pilot program like the one the city is undertaking provides opportunity for input and to see what problems come with total automation of pickup service. Already, we’ve identified there may need to be some alternative program or assistance given to residents who are unable to handle the large polycarts.

Systematically expanding the polycart system throughout the city makes sense because it provides an opportunity to identify problems and work out solutions before the entire community’s trash service is automated.

Trash collection is one of the most expensive and labor-intensive departments the city runs. Automation provides an opportunity to lessen the expenses and injuries to workers. We support the city continuing to work toward automation and efficiencies in trash collection.
