Community needs to turn out for farewell to troops

Enid always has been a community that supports the military.

We’ve seen countless examples of that patriotism throughout the years. And now Enid, it’s time to do it again.

On Wednesday, 54 local men and women — members of the 45th Fires Brigade — will leave town for what eventually will be deployment to Iraq. Staff Sgt. Cale Grauberger, a National Guard recruiter, has organized what he hopes is a proper sendoff for the troops.

We hope it is, too.

That, though, will depend on Enid and area residents. Grauberger hopes people line the streets along the route the bus carrying the soldiers will take.

The soldiers will board the bus at the National Guard Armory, 600 E. Elm., at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The bus will leave at 2 p.m. and follow a route out of town to Interstate 35. The route will go from the armory to 5th, 5th to Randolph, Randolph to Grand, then Grand to Garriott. From there, the bus will go east on U.S. 412 to I-35 then south to Texas.

At 10th and Garriott, Enid Fire Department will have its ladder truck displaying the American and National Guard flags.

Hundreds of motorcyclists are expected to follow the convoy, which also will include Enid Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The soldiers will spend 60 to 90 days at Fort Hood, Texas, training for convoy security missions before deploying to Iraq before the end of the year.

We encourage everyone who can to turn out and show their support for OUR troops. These are our friends and neighbors. They live here, they work here.

Let’s line the streets Enid. Let’s have lots of flags waving. Let’s see signs of support. Let’s see lots of red, white and blue.
