Local church raises money for school supplies

THUMBS UP

Gone but not forgotten.

That is certainly the case with Phillips University.

Phillips was a big part of the Enid scene from 1906 to 1998, before its unfortunate demise due to serious financial woes.

But the alumni and friends of Phillips have not let its memory die.

The Phillips University Legacy Foundation has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships in the school’s memory. Alumni hold an annual reunion, which took place this weekend. Alumni and friends also are raising money for a Phillips University Gallery, filled with school memorabilia, within the new Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center.

Thumbs up to the friends and alumni of Phillips University for keeping the school’s legacy alive.

THUMBS UP

The new school year is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to buy school supplies.

But for some families, purchasing school supplies can be a financial burden they simply can’t bear.

That’s where North Garland Church of Christ comes in. The church is continuing its tradition of raising money to buy school supplies for needy children. The confidential process provides local school children with the materials they need.

Thumbs up to North Garland Church of Christ and this wonderful, generous program.

THUMBS UP

If you can read this, thank a teacher.

A simple statement, but oh, so true. And teaching adults to read is the mission of Enid Literacy Council.

The group recently received a $10,000 grant to help with the costs of the services it provides. Enid Literacy Council is a volunteer-based program that provides free instruction to individuals 18 and older to help them increase their literacy level.

Thumbs up to Enid Literacy Council and its volunteers for helping open up the world of reading to local adults.

THUMBS UP

Play ball.

That’s a cry that will be heard often in the next couple of weeks as Enid’s David Allen Memorial Ballpark hosts not one, but two prestigious American Legion baseball tournaments.

Beginning Wednesday, Enid will host seven other teams from around Oklahoma in the state tournament. Enid is no stranger to state tournaments, having won three straight championships.

Then, starting Aug. 14, Enid will host the Mid-South Regional Tournament, the winner of which qualifies for the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C.

Thumbs up to the Enid Majors for their legacy of excellence, and to the Allen family for providing Enid with one of the finest baseball facilities in the nation.

THUMBS DOWN

It was bad enough University of Oklahoma football recruit Josh Jarboe, a talented wide receiver, was arrested earlier this year on weapons charges.

Now Jarboe is featured in a 74-second, profanity-laced Internet video, during which he raps about guns and shooting people. The video appears to have been filmed in a university dormitory.

Friday, OUhead coach Bob Stoops kicked Jarboe off the team for his ill-advised actions. Thumbs down to Jarboe for his bad rap.
