Camp Tomahawk allows youth to have week of fun

THUMBS UP

Summer is a time for kids to get out and have fun.

Thanks to Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce and Vance Air Force Base, several kids who might not otherwise be able to have the kind of fun as more fortunate kids get to attend Camp Tomahawk.

During Camp Tomahawk — held one week for boys and one week for girls — kids get to enjoy a variety of activities.

Thumbs up to all the volunteers at the chamber at Vance who make it possible.

THUMBS UP

Kiwanis Club members also make it fun to be in Enid during the summer.

They operate the train, carousel and other rides at Meadowlake Park, providing hours of entertainment for families.

They also are embarking on an ambitious program of improvements over the next four or five years. They plan to spend more than $250,000 on those improvements.

Club members soon will start a fundraising campaign to raise the money they need. We hope everyone will help out and give what they can.

Thumbs up to Kiwanis Club members for what they do — and what they plan to do.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to all the businesses recently honored by Community Development Support Association Smart Start Northwest Oklahoma with Spirit of the Family Awards.

They were honored for the family friendly benefits and policies for their employees they provided.

Awards recently were presented to Autry Technology Center, Continental Resources, Dexeus Oncology and Ward Petroleum.

Advance Food Co., a 2004 recipient of the award, also was honored with the first-ever Spirit of the Family Award of Excellence.

Congratulations to them all.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to people with no compassion for their fellow man.

Hartford, Conn., was the scene of such a display recently.

A man walking across a street was hit and tossed into the air by a car that veered across the center line. He hit the ground in the middle of the street and lay there.

Several people walked over and looked, while cars continued to drive by without stopping.

Police did receive four 911 calls, and a police car arrived shortly, but no one offered to render the man any aid.

What is our world coming to?

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to what’s going on at Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse.

As a partner in Oklahoma Museum Network, the science museum will be able to host several traveling exhibits that will further kids’ knowledge and fun.

Right now, the museum is hosting the Tornado Booth exhibit, which allows people to feel winds of an F1 tornado — up to 79 mph.

Other exhibits will be brought through every six months.

In addition, a new permanent exhibit, “Silage Beach,” which simulates vertigo is open.

We like what’s happening at Leonardo’s.
