Schools step up efforts to control bullying, fighting

Fighting and bullying have been problems at school since there have been schools.

According to a 2007 Oklahoma Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 5.1 percent of 2,612 public school students polled did not go to class at some point within a 30-day period because they felt unsafe at school or traveling to or from school. More than 10 percent of students were in a physical fight on school property within a one-year period.

It’s how schools respond and deal with the situation that’s important.

At Enid Public Schools, each school has a plan for dealing with and preventing bullying. And, while there still are fights and bullying, the number of suspensions due to fights has decreased in recent years.

That’s good to see, and it’s good to see EPS officials are taking the issue seriously. One way they do this is through peer interaction. Two prime examples of that are the Irish Ambassadors at Emerson Junior High School and the Lion Tamers at Monroe Elementary School. They are groups of students who help resolve issues before they get out of hand.

Having students work out their own differences is a good way to stop problems before they escalate. Teachers and administrators always are there, though, in case peer interaction isn’t enough.

Parents, too, need to be a part of the process — and not just when they need to be called because their children have been involved in an incident. They need to be part of the solution.

Parent networks could be one way to get adults involved. Through the networks, parents would be able to get in touch with school officials or other parents over issues involving bullying or fighting.

Bullying can be stressful on parents and children. Children — as Oklahoma Youth Behavior Survey shows — may become afraid to go to school. Their grades suffer, their self-esteem suffers, their relationships with friends suffer and their relationship with their parents suffer.

The more networking we can do with parents and school personnel, the better. And, the more training that can be made available, the better. Our schools have made great strides in cutting down on violence. But, now is not the time to rest on our laurels. Now is the time to do more, get more people involved.
