Grandson, EHS team are a class act for holding their tempers

On May 2, at the Class 6A state regional baseball tournament held at David Allen Memorial ballpark, several hundred fans witnessed an event rarely seen in today’s sporting events. Enid High was playing Muskogee in the championship game after both teams had beaten each other in the tournament. Everyone in attendance knew both teams were very good and that it would be a very emotionally charged game. Enid’s pitcher was the leadoff batter and was hit in the mouth by a fast ball. He was hurt, quite upset and understandably wanted revenge. As he started toward the pitchers mound along with players from both benches, the coaches from both teams took charge and controlled their players. In the past few years, way too often this results in a very ridiculous brawl. The Enid coaches escorted the injured player inside to assess the damage and the players from both teams went back to their dugout. No one was ejected because a very difficult situation was avoided. When the game resumed, the pitcher came back with a severely swollen lip to show what an entire team with a lot of heart, class and desire can accomplish. It was a hard-fought game by both teams and Enid ended up winning the game. Most importantly, after the game, both teams passed by each other in a show of outstanding sportsmanship. It was a disappointing loss for Muskogee. They have a very good team. Thanks to the Muskogee coaches for controlling their team members. To the Enid High coaches and players, I cannot express how proud I am of each of you for controlling your tempers and showing such maturity. To my grandson, John Dillingham, I want you to know I think you are a class act that will always be a winner in my book.
