ENID, OK — Funeral service for Ansel Cowan Jr., 92-year-old Enid resident, will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Golden Oaks Nursing Home Chapel. Rev. Keith Miller will officiate. Visitation will precede the service from 9-9:45 a.m. A private family burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Snyder, Okla., with full military honors under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

Ansel was born in Snyder, Okla., on March 26, 1921, to William Ansel N. and Dorothy (Nanney) Cowan.

He graduated from Snyder High School in 1939, and went on to study at Oklahoma A&M.

As a freshman, he met the love of his life, Margaret Parker of Douglas. They married in January 1942.

Ansel worked several years for the Civil Conservation Corps as an instructor in mechanics in northeast Oklahoma before serving as a gunnery instructor in the Army Air Corps during WWII.

Ansel worked for Halliburton Co. for 25 years as a mechanic and shop foreman.

After his first retirement, for 17 years, Ansel taught small engine mechanics at a vocational high school in Robertsdale, Ala. He and Margaret resided in Atmore, Ala., for over 30 years before returning to Oklahoma.

Ansel had been a life-long active member of the Southern Baptist Church. Since moving to Enid in 2002, he had been a member of Enid’s First Baptist Church. He had served as deacon and even up to his early eighties did volunteer mission work. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.

In his later years, he and Margaret enjoyed traveling, especially on the steamboat trips on the Mississippi River. For over 15 years, Ansel enjoyed participating in the annual Relay of Life as a cancer survivor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David; two sisters, Rilla Hickerson and Peggy Bridwell; and two nephews, Mike Cowan and Mike Moseley.

Ansel is survived by his wife, Margaret, and their three children: Howard and Sue Cowan of Lubbock, Texas, Margie [Macrina] Cowan of Enid and Geoffrey and Steffi Cowan of Ponca City. He leaves four surviving nephews and four nieces. The couple has five grandchildren, Eric Cowan of Dallas, Gregory Cowan currently serving in the diplomatic service in the Philippines, Sarah Hraban of Billings, Mont., Jennifer and Christy Cowan of Ponca City and Oklahoma City. Ansel rejoiced in meeting his seven great-grandchildren.

The Cowans have resided at Golden Oaks since 2002.

Memorials may be given through the funeral home to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, cancer division, or Hospice Circle of Love.
