Published 10-20-13

LAWTON, OK — Elizabeth “Liz” Sutherlin, formerly of Oklahoma City, Enid and El Reno, died in Lawton, Oklahoma, on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at age 96.

She was born March 7, 1917, in Havelock, Neb. She was the third of five children born to Marquis de Lafayette Wiley and Sophia (Shirk) Wiley. At age 9, she traveled with family during Christmas week 1926 to their home in Oklahoma. The family farmed near the Sedan community just southeast of Mountain View.

Elizabeth graduated from Sedan High School as valedictorian of the class of 1934. She enrolled in nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital in Ponca City, where she finished her training in May 1936. She continued practicing nursing during 1936 and 1937 at the hospital in Fairfax, Oklahoma. She worked as a private nurse in Ponca City through 1940.

On July 4, 1936, she married Lewis Carl Sutherlin in Ponca City, where the couple made their home until moving to Oklahoma City in 1940. At that time, Liz began her long career as a homemaker.

She was especially skilled in cooking, sewing, quilt-making, knitting and crocheting, all of which she did while keeping house and raising four children. Her talents led to cottage-based businesses including organizing neighbors to contract with hotel chains sewing drapes. Also, she successfully ran an income tax service.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed music, both as a listener and performer. She played piano and organ. She was an enthusiastic sports spectator with special interest in Oklahoma Sooner football, basketball and women’s softball, horse racing and professional golf. In later years, she became computer literate and loved to search the Internet. She was an avid reader, with appreciation for history, biography, religion and a good mystery. Her current activities included a women’s book club in Lawton. She maintained subscriptions to news magazines and usually knew what was going on in the world from day to day.

Elizabeth was a Christian. Raised in the Roman Catholic Church, she later joined Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was a member of Christian Church of the Covenant in Enid. While in Lawton, she attended Centenary United Methodist Church, recently completing a 90-day study that included rereading the complete Bible in that time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; her daughter, Elizabeth Louise (Sutherlin) Hume; a grandson, John Lewis Hume; her parents; and brothers and sisters.

Those whom she leaves in her passing and who will miss her most are three sons: Jim Sutherlin and wife, Judy, of Gravois Mills, Missouri, Tom Sutherlin and wife, Sharon, of Lawton, and Pat Sutherlin and wife, Linda, of Enid; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of others who, through the years, were proud to call Liz Sutherlin their friend.

The family appreciates the care provided by the people of Entrusted Hearts, HealthBack Home Health, Comanche County Memorial Hospital, McMahon/Tomlinson Nursing Center and Faith Hospice. Also, the family is grateful for the dedication and care provided by Dr. Krista Gordon.

On October 26, 2013, a graveside service will be 10 a.m. at Sunny Lane Cemetery, 3900 SE 29th, Del City, Oklahoma. The family requests in lieu of flowers those wishing to do so make donations to Christian Church of the Covenant, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home as custodian of the funds. Condolences may be made at www.ladusauevans.com.
