Alta Marie Melvin McBride

Published 9-22-13

DENTON, TX — Alta Marie Melvin McBride, of Denton, Texas, passed away Aug. 27, 2013, at the age of 85. Alta was born to Harry and Bea Butterfield Melvin on May 2, 1928, in Pueblo, Colo., while her father was being cared for in a military hospital after serving in WWI.

After her father died in 1930, her mother moved them to Oklahoma to be near family. In 1932, her mother married George Taylor, who became the father she had never known.

She grew up in Marland, Enid and eventually settled in Edmond, where she was baptized and later graduated from high school in 1946.

In 1949, she met and married Dale McBride. They moved to Enid, marking the beginning of a 64-year journey through love, family and travels.

Alta was a gifted, spirited woman who found joy in caring for and connecting with others. She was an artist at sewing, quilting and crafting, and this was her way of sharing and bonding with those she loved. Her handmade gifts made their way into the arms and hearts of family, friends and newly-met strangers. Just as she added new blocks to her beloved quilts, she added new people to her life.

While in Enid, she served as president of VFW Auxiliary and the PTA, and remained involved in her children’s lives and the community both in Enid and Carrier, Okla.

Her spirit of caring for others shone through during work at St. Mary’s Hospital, where she channeled her love of a good conversation with her love of caring for those in need for 17 years.

When Dale retired from Champlin Refinery, she retired from the hospital, and they moved to Point Comfort and later to Trophy Gardens in Alamo, Texas, to start the next chapter in their lives.

Embarking on worldwide traveling adventures, sharing stories with new people, and always staying close to family and friends, Alta continued to weave memories into her life. She loved telling stories and loved hearing them in return. She could dance the night away with her husband, her lifelong dancing partner. They ruled the floor when they jitterbugged, and were always eager to chaperone school dances for their children. She could have rooms full of people visiting and have conversations going in each one. She could surprise you with her quick wit, and have your favorite meal waiting when you arrived at her door. Like the quilts and sewing she loved, Alta believed everything was better when shared, and she stitched every memory with family, grandchildren and friends into her life. Alta never lost her spirit of compassion or her ability to talk to strangers as if she had known them forever.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Melvin, Beatrice Butterfield Melvin Taylor, and George E. Taylor; brothers, Jimmy Melvin and George (GR) Taylor; and grandson, Jeremiah Willems.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Dale McBride of Denton, Texas; children, Sherry McBride Loyd Wiser and husband Adam, Brenda McBride Willems and husband Randy, Denis McBride, and Joel McBride and wife Jane; grandchildren, James Loyd, Jason Loyd and wife Melissa, Brandelyn Wiser, William Wiser III, Chea Willems Coyle and husband Philip, Chad Willems, Autumn Willems, Joseph McBride, Jennifer McBride Griffith and husband Eric, Ryan McBride and wife Shannon, Marc McBride Conn and wife Kate, Sean McBride and wife Skyler, Stephanie Abrego and husband Chris, and Christopher Maldonado and wife Sheila; 16 great-grandchildren, Bryan, Brandon and Taylor Loyd, Keeley and Arabella Loyd, Logan and Noah Coyle, Alice and Maggie McBride, Anna, Rachel and Olivia Griffith, Jordan and Jarrod Flory, Cameron and Conner Abrego; great-great-grandchild, Lilly Loyd; sisters, Virginia Melvin Hanson Baker and Sue Taylor; and many extended family members.

Memorial service to celebrate her life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Marriott Springhill Suites, 5815 KL Drive, Enid, OK 73703.

There will be a meal and conversation with the family after the service, all are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer’s Association or Autism Speaks would honor Alta’s compassionate spirit. Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org; Autism Speaks, www.autismspeaks.org.

Condolences may be mailed to Dale McBride c/o Brenda Willems, 4653 Ainsley Drive, Plano, TX 75024.
